Celebración! : Nobuya Sugawax La Sax 10th Anniversary Concert
(Hong Kong, July 8, 2015) There has been a great controversy raised about the lack of local classical stars in Hong Kong’s music industry, which large music organizations need to reinforce their support to local talents. Despite these unfavorable circumstances and scarce resources, many native independent music groups are cultivating and emerging rapidly in recent years. Amongst the local artists, La Sax is one of the most active and outstanding saxophone ensemble group in Hong Kong.
Year 2015 is a critical milestone for La Sax. With great honor, La Sax has invited the leading Japanese saxophone superstar, Nobuya Sugawa, to be their guest soloist for their 10th anniversary concert at Hong Kong City Hall Concert Hall on September 1 2015. They are going to showcase dazzling saxophone music with emphatic versatility.
“It is not common to see a plenary saxophone ensemble in Hong Kong. La Sax’s greatest strength is its vivid and flexible character. There are different kinds of saxophones in terms of shapes and sound projection. An astounding dynamic range and tone color can be found in saxophone ensemble music. With such capability, we discover more possibilities and inspirations on our music creation,” says Jeffrey Chan, the music director of La Sax. The ensemble performs a diverse repertoire, ranging from classical, Jazz, contemporary to pop music. The members of La Sax also arrange and perform the pieces of music with their pristine trait. They embolden the music culture to the masses and endorse the appreciation of saxophone music publicly by engaging audience from all walks of life.
In the past 10 years, La Sax continued to grow and keep making new attempts. They strive to engage in community performances in a vibrant and lively way, bringing “edutainment” to audiences in schools, malls, residential etc. After completing his Master of Music degree in the USA two years ago, Jeffrey came back to Hong Kong dedicated to enriching local saxophone music development by nurturing the young generation. “The goal of learning music is not only about performing, but also about challenging your perseverance upon the process,” Jeffrey added. La Sax currently has more than 10 members, consisting of professional musicians, music degree graduates and students from local institutions, all of whom share the same passion of pursuing artistic excellence.
One highlight of the 10th Anniversary Concert will be the performance of the legendary international saxophonist, Nobuya Sugawa. It is a dream come true for all La Sax’s player to have the opportunity to perform with Sugawa, since he is their lifetime idol. Sugawa also revealed his excitement to this upcoming concert, “This is the first time I will perform with young musicians from Hong Kong. I look forward to mingling the passion of the performers with the sensation of audience, having a thorough and gratifying music interflow in Hong Kong.”
La Sax and Sugawa are presenting a variety of orchestral masterpieces, including Mussorsky’s best-known orchestral work A Night on the Bald Mountain, all-time prevalent movement of Holst’s The Planets Suite – Jupiter, Spanish classics Carmen Suite, Madrid Inspiration, proudly captivating the audience with an exotic night of intensity and excitement.
