須川展也
NOBUYA SUGAWA（日本Japan)
被譽為「當代古典色士風先鋒」的須川展也是一位日本引以為傲的國際知名色士風大師。他在日本東京藝術大學（前身為東京國立音樂藝術大學）學習色士風，師承小室由子。他曾分別於第51屆日本音樂比賽管樂組及第一屆日本管樂及敲擊樂比賽色士風組中獲得最高殊榮，亦曾獲得Idemitsu及Muramatsu音樂獎。須川曾在JT音樂人專輯中被邀請作為特寫人物，而他在廣告中的演出更為他帶來廣泛的知名度。
須川曾為日本及海外唱片公司灌錄超過三十張唱片專輯，這些唱片不僅收錄了他的個人作品，更囊括了他跟不同音樂家合作演奏的樂曲，而美國低音提琴家Ron Carter及著名爵士結他手Martin Taylor等均曾是他的合作對象。他所灌錄的唱片可謂將古典色士風音樂帶入一個全新領域，足以影響整個世界。
須川每年有近百場音樂會演出，亦曾到訪世界各地超過二十個國家舉行大師班及音樂會。他幾乎曾與日本所有樂團合作，當中包括日本NHK交響樂團。國內演出之外，他亦曾與海外多個知名管弦樂團同台獻藝，其中包括BBC愛樂樂團、德國符騰堡羅伊特林根愛樂樂團以及斯洛伐克愛樂樂團等。
自須川出道後，許多著名作曲家均曾為他編寫作品，當中無數作品均在國際樂壇上知名度甚高，部分甚至被評為二十至二十一世紀最重要的古典色士風音樂作品之一。其中包括：吉松隆的《絨毛鳥奏鳴曲》及《機械鳥協奏曲》、馬汀‧艾勒比的《肉桂協奏曲》、史沃特茲的《烏茲米舞曲》、長生淳的《迷失的帕格尼尼》、葛雷格森的《色士風協奏曲》等。在眾多樂曲中，吉松隆的《絨毛鳥奏鳴曲》令須川在國際音樂舞台受到注目，他並因此被稱為「Mr. Fuzzy Bird」及「Mr. Sugawa」。作為一個具有獨特風格的音樂家，他於國際樂壇的聲望實在不是一般的高。
從1981到2010年，須川一直擔任日本東京佼成管樂團的樂團首席。他在1996年獲頒授「濱松藝術及文化特別獎」，更在2009年被委任為「濱松市Yaramaika大使」。現時，須川除了是一位獨奏家，也是Trouvère色直風四重奏的成員之一。此外，他也是Yamaha管樂團的駐團指揮及東京藝術大學及京都市立藝術大學的客席教授。
Nobuya Sugawa is an internationally acclaimed saxophonist whom Japan is very much proud of. He studied saxophone at Tokyo University of Arts (formerly named Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music) with Yuichi Omuro. He has won the highest prizes in the Wind Instrument Category in the 51st Music Competition of Japan and in the 1st Japan Wind and Percussion Competition in the saxophone category. He has received the Idemitsu Music Award and the Muramatsu Award. Apart from awards, he is also known for his numerous appearances in television and radio programs. In 1998, he was featured in JT’s Musician Series, and his appearance in its TV commercials brought him overwhelming popularity. In 2002, he performed the theme music for ‘Sakura,’ a popular daily TV drama series broadcasted on NHK.
Sugawa has taken himself to more than 20 countries to hold recitals and teach master classes, and has recorded more than 30 CD albums on different Japanese and overseas labels. These albums introduce us not only his new repertoires, but also works performed with masterly musicians in various genres, like Ron Carter and Martin Taylor. Along with his albums, his music has revealed new musical horizons for classical saxophone, casting a considerable influence across the world.
He has performed with almost all orchestras in Japan including NHKSymphonyOrchestra. Outside the country, he has performed with BBC Philharmonic, WürttembergischePhilharmonie Reutlingen, Slovak Philharmonic Orchestra, to name but a few.
Since his debut, he has cooperated with numerous remarkable composers and a number of works were written for him. Many of these works, also premiered by him, have become internationally popular and been deemed as important classical saxophone repertoires of the 20th and 21st centuries. Some examples among many are Fuzzy Bird Sonata and Cyber Bird Concerto by Takashi Yoshimatsu, Saxophone Concerto by Edward Gregson, Cinnamon Concerto by Martin Ellerby, Dance of Uzumeby Piet Swerts andPaganini Lost by Jun Nagao etc. Particularly, Fuzzy Bird Sonata by Takashi Yoshimatsu has brought him to the limelight in the international music arena that he has been widely recognized as “Mr. Fuzzy Bird” as well as “Mr. Sugawa” since then. Hailed as a musician with outstanding personal style, he has been receiving broad attention of other saxophonists across the world.
He has assumed the role of the concert master of Tokyo Kosei Wind Orchestra for almost 22 years from 1989 through 2010. He received Hamamatsu Art and Culture Special Award in 1996, and has been appointed as an ambassador of Hamamatsu City ‘YARAMAIKA’ in 2009.
Currently, along with public activities as a soloist, he also performs as a member of Trouvère Quartet (Saxophone Quartet) and serves as the resident conductor of Yamaha Symphonic Band, and is a visiting professor of Tokyo University of the Arts and Kyoto City University of Arts.
